chinese new year is coming.
tomorrow will be the eve.

i am excited for chinese new year. as usual.
the two main events that i anticipate every year would be
cny and national day.

i like the mood.
it feels nostalgic.
it feels heartwarming.

nvm. maybe i will, after decorating my house.

grandma just washed my hc jc uniform.

just started watching 步步驚心 after seeing the first ep on ch8.
its really a nice show so i couldnt wait for the next ep,
and couldnt stand the ads on tv, so i decided to watch online.

“找來找去也找不到跟馬爾泰-若曦有關的半點信息，難道我這十多年的日子都不是真實的，只是夢嗎？”

the idea is creative, the plot is interesting, the casts are good talented.
(the only thing bad about it is the poor animation. is it done on purpose?! lol)
the lines are meaningful and beautiful...
the writer is extremely clever to think of such plots and lines,
and to write it in such a way that it fits the history.

this story could be real.

hate decision making.
okay maybe i shouldnt sound that harsh, so
i dislike decision making.

i dislike changes too.

but too bad, these two make up a big part of life.
and it seems like i always have to face them.
when that happens, i always think that
this is part of the challenge that i have to go through in order to perfect myself.
i mean, not trying to be perfect, but trying improve my character,
and getting rid of my weaknesses.

i've been complaining about how sucky my life is,
but if i overcome my dislikes for these things,

for me, there's a different feeling at different points of a day.

the feeling at 630pm
all feels uniquely different.
the sky, the atmosphere, the sound, your energy level..

it also works the same way for different days of a week.

i just chanced upon my calendar/diary book for 2011
and flipped to the first page where they wanted me to write down my goals for the year.
'msg < 1.5' 'all As' +alotof other stuff but, i'm only mentioning these two because well,
it' unbelievable.
because,
i managed to hit the target, i reached my goal.

i remember when i was writing that, it was just a form of motivation, to tell myself to do better, to work harder. never did i imagine that i will actually score that well.
i am really happy, and surprised. at what i've written, and what i had achieved.
i am surprised at myself, at my accomplishment.
i felt a sense of satisfaction.

luck? fate?
i don't know.

but i am going to write one for 2012 too. :)

still as emotional, and a bigger SONE.
i went to the first concert in my life,
i flunked two science papers for blocktest1 and 2,
i did surprisingly well for endofyear report,
i know more about the world, and i care more, too.

how am i going to spend the last day..

nothing unique, nothing surprising, nothing sentimental.
just going to pack my room, and complete what has been on my todolist for a long time.

but i realised that i am very very efficient at night, so

hehe, besides being efficient, i feel happier, and

We've already had signs, since the occurrence of SARS, bird flu, H1N1, indonesia tsunami, Japan China ++ earthquakes,

Take that and pair it with a combo of global warming, poverty, pollution, corruption, wars.
These give a hint to what to expect in 2012.
Yeah, it sure is bad.

But things can CHANGE.
What if people stop polluting, stop corrupting, stop the greed, and the successor of NK finally sees what's really best for its people?
Well, these depends on the few big people who plays a part in all these,
and I don't think they will be reading this, or suddenly decide to change for good,
but commoners (:P) like us,
CAN do something.

Start by being a nice person.
A good child to your parents,
A good friend to your friends,
a good student to your teachers,
a good citizen to your country. (YEAH STOP COMPLAINING SINGAPOREANS!)

Spread these good acts around,

girls; korean pop songs meanings

i have to say that
girls just love dolling themselves up.

because i love to do that too!
from painting of your nails,
to experimenting hairstyles,
to matching your clothes and shoes, and bags (girls seriously have a thing for shoes and bags)
to putting on makeup.

i dont mind spending hours doing them.
because i'm a girl.

besides kpop songs being catchy/having beautiful melodies,
the meaning of the song/lyrics are really, well, meaningful!
i mean, for non-koreans like me, i can only listen to the tune, watch the expressions of the singers and the dance moves, with occassional appearance of familiar words from my limited korean vocabulary, to guess and interpret the meaning of the songs.
of course, this is before googling the eng translations of the songs online.

but one amazing thing is that,
watching (eng)subbed musicvideos on youtube
not just only helped me understand the meaning of the song,
it made everything fall in place,
how the meaning fits how it sounds in korean,
how the meaning fits the dance moves, the mv setting, the tune etc.

it makes the songs 100times better!
the boys, bubble pop, so hot etc

without knowing the translations,
people may think that "bring the boys out" means girls generation is so hot that they can bring the boys out.
but no.
after watching the engsubbed mvversion,
you will then know that it is actually about giving encouragement for the guys out there who have no confidence in themselves, or who are tired with life.
they want them to stand up for themselves.
it is a song about bringing the confidence of the boys out.
and then, everything begins to fit.

i'm influenced!

but that being said, it doesnt mean that i am easily persuaded to...
yes, i can be swayed into buying a certain product,
but definitely not ideas/opinions, like political sides or how certain thing/group/person is/are bad. things like that.
so, i am easily persuaded, only when it is about products, things that i can see, cosmetics electronics food stationery etc.
and when it comes to some kind of idealogy, you definitely cannot talk me into believing something. unlike my mom.:P

Taiwan, 2011 trip

Some things that I want to say before sharing what I have done over there,
some things that I have noticed. From a Singaporean POV

1. Escalators
They were thoughtful and everyone observes the rule of standing on the right side of the escalators, to allow people who are rushing to move via the left side. Something we have to learn. But i must say that we are improving too, I see more people here standing on the left here in SG now :)

2. On MRT
They have lesser seats on the train when compared to ours, and almost everyone gives up their seats when they see those in need, elderly, those with infants, etc.

3. Roads
Motorbikes in almost every lane, alley, road, pathways. The cars vs motorbikes ratio is almost 50:50. But it is kind of uncomfortable, and "annoying" when you get motorbikes squeezing their way past you in a pathway that is about 1m wide. In places somewhat similar to our Bugis street, motorbikes are behind you once every 10 mins.
What seems to be walkways also have cars travelling on it, so it is a bit dangerous and confusing.
Traffic jams every morning and evening, during peak hours.
So i think Singaporeans are way luckier in this aspect. :)

4. Korean-wave, Hallyu in Taiwan
Everyone knows that hallyu is taking over the world now, it is even more evident in Taiwan. Taiwan, a site for mandopop, has been hit by the kwave, which can be seen from their tv programmes, on the streets, way of dressing etc.
Their TV programmes are 50% korean. Complete with Inkigayo, Music Bank, Music Core, Strong Heart, Dreamteam, 4minute'steacherprogramme, Idol Anatomy, Runningman, Invincible Youth and many more.
and a handful of local programmes covering kpop news etc.
Though some of the programmes and news are lagged by a few weeks, due to subbing.
kpop songs are heard playing in stores on every street. With groups ranging from SuperJunior, Girls' Generation, 2pm, f(x), Infinite, Sistar, etc.
KPOP DAEBAK!

will update more on places i went, mainly for shopping, as the purpose of this trip was really just to shop. (Shilin Nightmarket, Zhongxiao Eastrd, Wufenpu, Taipei Mainstation, Ximending, etc)

meanwhile, for conclusion,
I realised recently, since last year,
I've gained more interest in what i did not enjoy doing in the past,
like reading the newspapers, watching news broadcast, watching documentaries, channel newsasia, channel 5 etc.
I think besides the fact that i am growing up, maturing, or in a stage whereby i am curious about the world, IH (integrated humanities) and LA (language arts) lessons caused this sudden growing interest. I find the topics covered interesting, and the way of learning and analyzing the situations and various case studies made it even more appealing and made me want to know more. Being more "knowledgable", i am then able to understand what those documentaries, world news on the tv are talking about.
It is really cool to see something on the tv and say "oh yes, i know, i've learnt it in school before" and you will start thinking "hey, i want to watch that and learn more about the issues," and naturally, the programme becomes more interesting to watch. in the past, i never understood why my father loved to watch channel news asia, or the news broadcast. i thought those shows were unnecessary and boring. but now, it's not.

the 4 years seemed like a dream to me,
and i'm feeling the post-dream blues now.
awake, facing the reality that i am growing up, and older.

results are back, and i realised that many of the things that i was worried for, actually turned out quite good, surprisingly.
and, things which i hoped for, do happen.
the opportunities that i dreamed of came, and it dawned to me that the only thing that matters is that whether or not i choose to make use of it.
problems that i dreaded were actually resolved.
so,
life is good afterall.

school is over, but im still not in that mood yet, because of hcl olvl which i'm going to take this thursday.

and we must be ready to fight with our pastel rose pink swords!

holidays are great so far,
because i spent 2/3 days going out to nice places, with good rewards,
like i went to hawparvilla, and enriched myself,
and went shopping twice, and bought 2 bags, 1 top, a bunch of soshi goods, 2 rings, 1 bracelet.
and i treat this as a warm up, for my taiwan trip coming soon:P
but after this shopping trip, i am prepared to get my money back- i wanna earn money! XD

生命中小小的感动

“滴答！滴答！”雨滴，它们在房间窗外轻轻地拍打着，拍打着一种令人游哉游哉的节奏，也带来了我对生命无数的思考与感叹。

我喜欢下雨。我喜欢，前奏刚响起时，它的忧郁，它的特别气味，它的清幽氛围。我喜欢，来临时，沙沙的催眠声响，眼前事物一切模糊的景色，还有它的朦胧。雨停了，大地万象似乎又重新再一次地接受了洗礼，路旁小树苗上的雨珠，散发出坚强与生命力。这时，我感到一种莫名的感动。这，是浓厚诗意所带来的感动。

我也很喜欢看着窗外。我喜欢看鸟儿自由自在地在天上翱翔，然后在黄昏时，与伙伴们成群结队地划过天空，飞回自己的鸟巢。我喜欢看一家人坐在组屋前的草地上聚餐，也喜欢看着一群兄弟姐妹在那儿放风筝，玩捉迷藏。不知不觉，我的嘴角都会自然地挂着微笑。我喜欢看婆婆握着孙子的小手在人行步道上慢慢行走的背影。这时，我又感到一种莫名的感动。这，是人间温情所带来的感动。

and, Fans’ Interpretation of SNSD’s Concept Photos from their 3rd Album ‘The Boys’
i must praise the authors for being so observant!!!

SNOW WHITE – TAEYEON(태연)

first, when i saw the victorian dress, i predicted and expected everyone's teasers to be in similar dresses but the rest was shockingly cool. and i did not spot the apple before people mentioned about it.

In the fairy tale, Snow White falls into deep slumber after taking a bite out of the poisoned apple offered by her disguised evil stepmother, The Queen. The spell was broken only after Snow White was rescued by the Prince.
However, in Taeyeon’s concept photo, if you look closely, she has taken a bite out of the apple and yet, she is still standing firm in the photo, i.e. not affected by the poisonous apple.

SWAN PRINCESS – JESSICA (시카)

i dont know much about fairy tales, so i was really puzzled by the dove and everything else, and a lot of sones were like me too. but:

In the fairy tale, the Swan Princess were protected by doves. But in Jessica’s concept photo, she was releasing the dove into freedom with her own hands.

LITTLE RED RIDING HOOD – SUNNY(써니)
this was the one that is the most obvious to me, which hinted 'fairytale' to me.

Sporting a stark difference with the innocent and naive Little Red Riding Hood that we know, Sunny looked witty and smart in her concept photo, as though she will never be bluffed or taken in by any big bad wolves.

THE LITTLE MERMAID – TIFFANY(파니)
so observent to notice the glitter/scales on her legs!!

In order to meet her Prince, the little mermaid gave up her beautiful voice in exchange of a pair of legs with the “help” of the sea witch.

In Tiffany’s photo, we can see that not only does she have a pair of beautiful legs, she was also holding on to her dreams of performing on stage, as represented by the numerous glitter balls.

THUMBELINA – HYOYEON(효연)

In the fairy tale, Thumbelina, as her name implies, is a tiny girl, the size of a thumb. She emerged from a flower of a barleycorn, which was given by a beggar woman to a peasant’s wife in exchange for food.

However, in Hyoyeon’s photo, we can see that she adorned many beautiful flowers on her head. Does this mean that she overcame her size and everything else that came with it?

THE RED SHOES – YURI(유리)

was completely puzzled by this also.

The Red Shoes is one of the darker fairy tales in the list. In the story, the vain little girl was obsessed with the new red shoes, which she tricked her adoptive mother into buying. She pays no attention to service in church and attends a party in her new shoes, desserting her sick mother. She was then cursed to dance all the time without stopping, until she amputated her legs.

In Yuri’s photo, we can see that she managed to take off her red shoes and yet still possesses a pair of beautiful legs. And what are those red specks on the ground? ^^

RAPUNZEL – SOOYOUNG(수영)

Rapunzel was locked and trapped in a tower with no doors and stairs by the Enchantress. When the Prince chanced upon her in the woods by following her beautiful voice, she had to let down her long hair to let him climb up the tower before they can

meet.

However, in the photo, it is obvious that Rapunzel’s (Sooyoung) symbolic long hair has been cut short (imagine Rapunzel’s hair from the top to the bottom of the tower).

BEAUTY AND THE BEAST – YOONA(윤아)

At first i didnt know what the sword was indicating.

In contrast with the Belle in the story, Yoona boasted a strong, charismatic aura in her photo while yielding a sword. Perhaps this signifies that she is not a weak girl and no longer require saving and protection by the Beast.

SNOW QUEEN – SEOHYUN(서현)

A passage from the Bible was used at the end of the fairy tale: “Assuredly, I say to you, unless you are converted and become as little children, you will by no means enter the kingdom of heaven.”

This perhaps carries a hidden meaning where the public hopes that SNSD will always remain as “SoNyuhs”. With Seohyun’s appearance and a cold expression in the photo, maybe she was trying to break the “spell” casted by the Snow Queen.

Basically, it appears as though every members were portraying different roles in various fairy tales. It also happens that most of the photos captured the essence/changing points of the fairy tales, such as Taeyeon’s apple, Yuri’s shoes, Jessica’s dove, Sooyoung’s hair, etc.

It was really thoughtful for the person who came up with these ideas, with the small hints lying around, and props to the who saw through this and did all the detective work. I like how each photo has a meaning, a story, of a fairytale, which each has a beautiful message behind it, and the ill fates and mishappenings are tweaked for an even greater and powerful message.

regardless whether the photos were really meant to be interpreted this way, this is a really good attempt.

Put together with the title of the main song ‘The Boys’, one can perhaps envision the concept/main theme of the third album to be:

While keeping and maintaining the qualities and images of the female heroines in fairy tales, the girls are also trying to walk out of the boundaries of such tales to become truly modern and independent women.

陰差陽錯更是非常有創意好過現在的那個9點檔的戯（請國外演員來但戲本拍攝水準還是近年來的那樣不怕丟臉嗎？）

希望能夠再次找到以前的藝術感

爲什麽主流8頻道不要改進呢？

this year's fun,
but i thought last year's concept is better, i like it when they gave us lightsticks and switched off the lights. it felt like a fun concert.

finished watching the parade,
and totally enjoyed it.
the concept was nice and i like the fact that it was linked to the mv, with scenes that was not included in the mv which means they took the trouble to film extra footage, which is great.

but while watching, i realised and reflected on quite a number of things.

1. our mr president
many thought he didnt do much, including me. i mean, we dont "see" him doing things as a president.
but recently, through interviews and from the commentator for the parade,
i realised that he, or our presidents, actually do a lot and participated a lot in meetings and decision-making, it is just all behind-the-scene.
also, take in account for the many decades before his terms as a president.
he contributed a lot to our country, and
actually volunteered to be held hostage by the JRA to secure the release of civilian hostages.
now, THINK, before you criticise him.
he deserves the position.
so, i am very thankful for the past 12 years, and good job, mr president. :D

2. our generation and the few to come
it then dawned on me that my generation is the cut off point.
it will be the last generation to witness the transition into modernisation.
it is counted as the third singapore generation, and being that, all three saw singapore through hard times, with the first witnessing independence and instability,
the second growing up with singapore and having the most "singaporean" childhood,
and the third catching that last bit of retro, kampong spirits on tv and from their parents.

and then it is sort of lost.
dialects, patriotism, the singapore spirit.
more people are getting tired of saying the pledge, or singing the national anthem, or the national day songs.
more people are wanting to migrate overseas.
though i cannot deny that there are still a big group of people who love singapore a lot, the number is not as big as before.
so i want you all, to unite,
all singaporeans, the youth, the young,
to carry on the singapore spirit,
because i want us, to be able to still tell the stories of singapore to our next generation.
the tough job is on us, because everything will be different in their eyes.
they have to rely on us to tell them the history of singapore, the kampong spirit, singlish, and everything about singapore. it can be how our primary school days used to be like, our the singapore slangs we use in secondary schools, etc.

3. our country
the culture, the unique cultural background.
this is something i truly love about singapore,
it is really the kampong spirit.
i am really proud to be a singaporean.
traditions in the parade, like the parachutes, the marching, EVERYTHING.
history, journeys we've made through as one singapore.
every year, we focus on the beginning, the past, on the history of singapore, how everything and everyone came together, and then how we brave through the storms and how we managed to become who we are today.
this repeats every year, for a reason.
because this, is what makes us singapore.
and what makes us singaporeans.

presidency elections?
online, i see many people "encouraging" others to vote for the "opposition" (though he quitted for this elections), and to be not afraid in voicing out their opinions and "show the ruling party" that we are a democratic society.

hmmm.....
there are many loopholes in this argument.
firstly, people have their own reason in voting for pap, or whatever other party they want. it might not be that we are scared.
and secondly, a big issue that i have noticed,
people vote for the sake of voting for the opposition.
i think this is something we must realise,
that even though you might be dissatisfied with the current ruling,
dont let this blind you and just
vote for the sake of opposing..
have you ever wondered if they are capable?
have you ever wondered,
so what if you won?
so what if you "showed" the government that we are capable of making our own decisions?
what is going to happen after that?
you believe in whatever they say in their speeches?
100% truth? and at the same time, whatever pap says is fake?

i mean,
i am not siding pap, nor opposition in this case,
BUT
people have to "wake up".
its okay if you want to vote for opposition,
i'm fine. and i do want some different voices in the parliament.
but you have to wait.
see what they have done first.
dont give them praise even before you see any results.
this is completely blind supporting.
if there's good results, yes, everyone will see it and maybe they will have more "territories" in singapore in 2016.
we have eyes, we can see. and we have brains, we can decide for ourselves.

just because he is opp, doesnt mean he is pro singaporean.
and just because others are related to pap, they are not.
this is hasty generalization.
once again, NO offence and i'm not doing any targeting.

for me,
i just hope the best man wins.
true pro singaporean who is not related to pap, or opposition, perhaps.
someone who stands up not because of money either.

and in the future, i hope people in the parliament, government or whatever,
can take a chance to look, or better, monitor, the online comments some fellow singaporeans have to offer. some of them are real good ones, some, i dont even know if they are coming from singaporeans. however, true or not, it does show the concerns in our society.
to make everyone happy, just see and try to improve.

at the end of the day,
i dont want pap to win,
i dont want opposition to win.
i just want singapore to prosper.

until i randomly switched to channel5's airing of singapore-malaysia world cup qualifier live first leg
partly because its singapore, my country,
and also 'cause its vs malaysia,
it made me very curious and i continued watching on.
i felt that it was ME playing.
i started screaming and shouting over every move they made

anyway, i was absolutely happy over the win 5-3.
yet many amusingly pessimistic people are saying that we will still lose to malaysia in the second leg
together with some boliao people commenting that the goals were made by foreigners, i would like to tell them that yeah, cuz singaporeans are on the defence/center line, singaporeans are on the seats cheering for our SINGAPORE team, and true singaporeans will not sit in front of the computer jeering our OWN team. if you're that good, then go play laarh! you cant even get in! when qiuli was interviewed, he said he wish to play against china. see, even they love singapore more than you do. so shut up boy. these are real talent, and people who play for singapore. if you are upset at the normal foreigners whom you meet in your daily life then thats your own business.
and, the malaysians threatened that they will give us "living hell" over in malaysia stadium

yet the confidence i had in the lions wasnt deminished at all.

being more involved in the match, i tuned in to the live broadcast punctually and watched with anticipation, (and later on, anger and bemusement).
first it was the laser,
then it was, quote from the coach in the newspapers "the referee didnt protect our players and allowed malaysia to get away with some ridiculous fouls"
its okay, coach.
i dont think the referee did it on purpose,
i mean, 80000++ people watching?
there's a reason why our supporters left one hour later, after the malaysians left.

i dont mind if our boys lose the next round,
but i'm satisfied with this result already.
